Dhaka Jan 27: Abahani Limited moved to the top of the point table when the defending champions recorded a 1-0 victory against Brothers Union in the sixth round of the Grameenphone Bangladesh League today at the BSSM Mostafa Kamal Stadium.
After a 4-1 win over Rahamatganj in the fifth round, the Dhaka giants found themselves in trouble as they failed to score in a tense first half.
However, the sky-blues sealed three points with a stunning strike from Ghanaian forward Frank on the hour.
Frank, who shaped up most of the Abahani’s attack pairing with Ibrahim, broke the deadlock when he thundered a right footed volley from 35 yards into the roof of the net, giving Brothers substitute keepers Rogu’s no chance.
Brothers, who had Rogu sent off in the 76th minutes receiving a direct red card for a cheesy challenge on Frank, got their best chance three minutes before the half time but Cameroon strikers Bitcha Richard shot to goalie Sohel.
Just before the conceding the goal, Brothers frontman Faisal got a chance but his shot was blocked by Abahani’s defender.
The win put Dhaka Abahani on top of the table with 13 points having four wins, one draw and one loss while Brothers Union are trailing them by six points having win one match, three draws and two losses.
The winning team’s Iranian coach Ali Akbar is very satisfied with his boys’ performance. “Everybody becomes happy after the win. Off course, I am satisfied. It is good to see Abahani win. They could make goal difference bigger what chances they got.” said the Abahani’s coach.Brothers coach Wasim Iqbal was disappointed on his players’ performances. “Boys performances were not up to the mark today as a big match. They missed their chances and Abahani took it. This is a high temper matches. They were under some pressure. And what happened in the field was result of pressure.”” said former national booter.
