Abahani finish at the top
Dhaka, April 15: Dhaka Abahani finished the first phase of the Grammenphone Bangladesh Premier League at the top of the table with a 1-1 draw against Muktijoddha at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday.
With the draw Abahani earned 24 points from their scheduled 10 matches while Muktiojoddha who also completed their quota of 10 matches finished second with 21 points.
Muktijoddha got the first chance of the match in the 4th minute but forward Zahid Hasan Emily’s head of a Firoz Mahmud Titu cross missed the side post by a few inches.
However it was Abahani who took the lead in the 14th minute. Ghanaian forward Twum Frank curved a cross from the right flank and midfielder Tawhidul Alam who was about to head the ball was pushed down by Titu and the referee Azad Rahman awarded a penalty. Frank converted the spot kick with his 4th goal (1-0).
Muktijoddha midfielder Mamunul Islam saw his fierce 20 yard left footer punched away for a corner in the 25th.
Muktijoddha defender Rafael leveled the score line in the 63rd minute as the tall Brazilian sent the ball into the near post with a low header on free kick of Ariful Islam.
Both of the team spoiled a number of chances at the finishing stages to share the points
