Dhaka, May 22: Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club Ltd gave Dhaka Abahnai the first taste of defeat in the Grameenphone Bangladesh Premier League with a 2-0 win at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Tuesday. Sohel Rana and Wahed scored the goals for the winners. Mohammedan went up in the 26th minute when midfielder Shariful Islam ran down the right flank and curved a cross, Abahani goalie Shahidul Alaam Sohel punched the cross but the fall into the feet of unmarked Sohel Rana who slotted the ball home from the left edge of the six yard box (1-0) Sohel Rana fired another long range in the 32nd minute but the ball flew over the bar. Young forward Wahed doubled the lead in the 44th minute after he controlled the ball at the top of the box when Abahani defenders tried to implement an off side trap, Wahed sensing he was on side beat his marker Samad Youssif and put the ball into the far post with an angular shot (2-0) Abahani piled up pressure upon the Mohammedan defence but their efforts were confined into a number of free kicks. In the 50th minute Ghanaian Awudu Ibrahim saw his effort from the top of the box saved for a corner by Mohammedan goalie Titumir, in the 55th minute Jahid’s free kick was punched in the same style. Abahani failed to create any clear cut chances due to their poor finishing. In the stoppage time Cameroonian Yoko Samnick’s grounder was fisted away by Titumir. In the 84th minute Sohel Rana was sent off due to the second yellow card for his unsporting behavior Abahani however remained on the top with 30 points from 13 matches while Mohammedan took their tally to 17 points from 12 matches.
