Dhaka, May 26: League topper Abahani Ltd returned to the winning spree beating Brothers Union 4-2 in the second phase of the Grameenphone Bangladesh Premier League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Saturday. Abahani Ltd was lost to Mohammedan SC Ltd 2-0 in the last match.
With the win, Abahani took the lead in the points table with 33 points from 14 matches while Brothers Union remained their previous earning 15 points from the same number of the matches.
Abahani went ahead in the 16th minute from a penalty. Brothers midfielder Md. Javed brought down Abahani’s right winger Md. Jahid by bad tackle from the behind in the box. Ghanaian striker Twum Frank converted the penalty. (1-0)
The sky-blues were reduced to ten men in the 30th minute when referee Azad Rahman sent off winger Md.Jahid with second yellow of the match.
But Abahani continued attacking football and they got the prize as Ghanaian striker Frank scored his second by a header off defender Md Linkon cross from the right flag. (2-0)
After the break, Ghanaian play maker Awudu Ibrahim scored third goal for Abahani in the 48th minute. Availing a cut back of Brazilian forward Jean Carlo De Silva, first appearance in the league, Ibrahim’s powerful shot between two defenders hit the back net. (3-0)
Brothers came back in the game in the 60th minute when Nigerian forward Olalekan Jashua headed home after Abahani’s goalie Shahidul Alam Shohel missed the flight of Brothers midfielder Tonmoy Hossain Tanu’s cross. (3-1).
Midfielder Arman Aziz added the fourth goal in the 65th minute by a lone effort. Taking a pass from Ibrahim, the defensive midfielder entered in the box and beat onrushing goalie Uttam Barua by a placing shot. (4-1).
Nigerian forward Kingsley Chigozie reduced the margin for Brothers Union in the 77th minute by cracking shot from the edge of the box off his compatriot Olalekan Joshua. (4-2)
In the first leg Abahani drew with Brothers 1-1.
