Dhaka, October 12: Sheikh Russel Krira Chakkra confirmed
group champion defeating Mohammedan Sporting Club Ltd 2-0 in the group A match
of the Grameenphone Federation Cup at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on
Friday. Both teams have already
reached quarterfinal birth. Sheikh Russell were on
the attacking mode from the very beginning and tried to break opponent’s
defence but Mohammedan’s game strategy was defensive and counter attack. Both teams got several
chances to take the lead but their forwards spoiled all opportunities as the
first half ended 0-0. After the lemon break,
Jahid Hossain broke the deadlock in the 47th minute for Sheikh Russel after a
mistake of Mohammedan’s Nigeriant defender Kali Osman who failed to clear
the ball properly. After intercepting a clearance of Kali Osman, the Russell
winger Md Jahid Hossain’s shot hit the back of the net. (1-0) Russell doubled the
lead three minutes later when National striker Jahid Hasan Emily’s fierce right
footer hit the crosspiece before finding the net. (2-0) Russell’s lead could
have been extended in the 63rd minute but Haitian Sony Norde failed to score in the one-on-one
situation. After conceding two
goals, Mohammedan tried to reduce the margin but all their efforts went in vain
due to lack of finishing touch. Mohammedan’s best
chance came in the 81st minute but midfielder Mobarak’s shot hit the cross piece.
