Dhaka, October 17: Defending champions Sheikh Jamal beat Dhaka Abahani by 2-1 goals in the 3rd quarterfinal of the Grameenphone Federation Cup at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Wednesday.
In the 2nd semifinal on Saturday Jamal will meet the winner of Brothers Union Muktijoddha quarterfinal. .
Sheikh Jamal was livelier side in the initial minutes and took the lead in the 31st minute through their Nigerian forward Mike Otojareri. His compatriot Sunday Chizoba headed a ball to Otajeri from the midfield and Otojareri sped his way past the Abahani defence and placed the ball past onrushing Abahani goalie Shahidul Alam Sohel (1-0). Abahani tried to comeback and in the 37th minute Ghanaian forward Twum Frank’s angular shot from the edge of the box missed the side post. Abahani goalie Sohel saved his team from conceding another as he dived into the feet of Sunday Chizoba and took control of the ball in a one-to-one situation in the 40th minute. After the re-start Sunday Chizoba again came close but his shot from the middle of the box flew past the crosspiece in the 54th minute. But Otajeri doubled the margin in the 60th minute after a combined move. Ikechkwu Okemeri took control of a Shakil cross and pushed a through pass to Otojareri who beat Sohel with a left footed shot (2-0) Substitute midfielder Touhidul Alam hit back for Abahani in the 82nd minute after Jamal goalie Mostak failed to grip a Awudu Ibrahim free kick and Touhid placed the ball in the far post (2-1).
