Dhaka, December 7: Bangladesh restored some pride with a 1-0 win over Maldives in their last match of the Mahidra Rajapaksah International Football at the Jayathilake Stadium, Nawalapitya, Sri Lanka on Friday. Having lost the first two matches in identical 1-0 margin against Pakistan and Sri LankaBangladesh U-23 team had nothing but to show their character and the players did it in a dominating style. It was all through Bangladesh as the attackers cornered their opponents with strings of attacks from the very beginning. Forward Touhidul Alam scored the match winner in the 31st minute but the attackers missed another couple of chances. In the 11th minute Touhid headed a Linkon cross straight to Maldives goalie Sahuran. Touhid again failed to head the ball past the Maldives goalie after Rony paved the way for him by heading a Uttam free kick into his way. Bangladesh’s onslaught saw four corners won in the first ten minutes. Sohel Rana, the young forward blasted the bal over the crosspiece in the 26th minute. Touhid who missed an open net in the 30th minute failing to tap the ball in off a Linkon cross amended his failure just one minute later with an opportunistic strike. Watching Sahuran out of position Touhid placed the ball over the Maldives goalie, but the ball rebounded of the woodwork however Touhid kept his cool to insert the ball into the net in his second effort. Maldives tried to regroup after the resumption and in the 50th minute Abdullah’s head on a Sadin cross whistled past the Bangladesh side post. In the 76th minute Sohel Rana saw his curling free kick miss the Maldives sidepost by a few inches. Shakahwat Rony, in the 81st minute took control of Yeamin Munna through but his weak shot hardly bothered Sahuran. Bangladesh team will return on December 9th.
