Dhaka, December 21: Sheikh Russell inflicted the first defeat on defending champions Abahani with a 1-0 victory in the crucial tie of the Grameenphone Bangladesh Premier League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Friday. Bosnian defender Bojan Petric scored the all important goal in the 40th minute. Mamun Miah, the Russell defender dashed down the right flank in the 10th minute and curved a dangerous cross in the middle of the Abahani box, Abahani goalie Shahidul Alam Sohel came out of his position to punch the ball to safety and deny waiting Russell forwards Mithun and Emily. Sony Norde, the Haitian forward of Sheikh Russell made his way through the Abahani defence in the 13th minute but Emily standing unmarked at the top of the six yard box tapped the ball over the crosspiece It was Bosnian defender Bojan Petric who broke the deadlock in the 40th minute and put Russell ahead. Midfielder Mamunul Islam curved a free kick from the midfield and Bojan jumped timely to send the ball into the far post net with fine header (1-0) The proceedings most of the time remained struck in the midfield as both the teams lacked the finishing touch after the break. In the 72nd minute Emily again failed to score as he shot straight to Abahani goalie Sohel after Mithun cut a fine through pass from the left flank. Abahani’s lone scoring chance came in the 83rd minute but Ghanaian forward Twum Frank carrying an Yoko Samnick through pass saw his placing shot blocked by Russell goalie Biplob. Abahani has ten points from five matches while Russell has nine points from four matches.
