Dhaka, December 27: Sheikh Russell climbed to the top of the table with a fighting 2-1 victory over Brothers Union at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Thursday. Haitian forward Sony Norde scored the winner in the stoppage time for Russell. Russell came close to a strike in the 20th minute but Rezaul karim Reza’s head on a Sony Norde cross missed the side post. In the 24th minute Russell winger Jahid Hossain saw his right footer blocked by Brothers goalie Sabuj Das Roghu after he carried a Mamunul Islam through pass past the defence. In the very next minute Brothers midfielder Toufiq Hasan Gafur beat Russell’s offiside trap with a through pass of Nigerian midfielder Adams Jankasha but goalie Biplob came out of the box to clear the ball off Gafur’s feet. Brothers took the lead in the 34th minute through their Nigerian forward Kingsley Chigozie who headed a cross of Brazilian midfielder Garcia Anderson past Biplob from the edge of the six yard box (1-0) Biplob saved Russell from conceding another in the 42nd minute as he kicked a placing shot of Garcia Anderson to safety. However Russell’s Moroccan forward Tarek al Marzouk scored the equalizer in the 43rd minute after Jahid Hossain provided a cut-back to the Moroccan who placed the ball in the near post (1-1) In the 60th minute Russell defender Linkon found the Brothers net open but he placed the ball wide off the right hand post. Brothers hit back with a counter attack in the 74th minute but Kingley Chigozie’s right footed tap on a Malek cross was saved by a diving Biplob. When the match was heading for a tie Haitian forward Sony Norde scored the winner. Jahid initiated a through from the middle, Mithun changed the direction with a delicate tap, Sony Norde ran from left flank and placed the ball in the far post (2-1) Russell has 12 points from five matches while Brothers conceded their fifth consecutive defeat.
