Dhaka, March 26: Sheikh Jamal moved into the semifinals of the ATN Bangla Independence Cup football with a goalless draw at the Kamalapur stadium on Tuesday. Mohammedan came close to a strike in the 6th minute but Nigerian midfielder Sesan Idowu’s shot from the middle of the box deflected off the feet of Jamal defender Ariful and landed in the lap of goalkeeper Sultan Ahmed Shakil. Osie Morrison wasted another chance for the black and white outfit in the 10th minute as the Ghanaian forward standing unmarked in the box placed the ball over the crosspiece. Jamal’s makeshift forward Arup Baidya broke the off-side trap in the 25th minute and was able to place the ball past advancing Mohammedan goalie Mamun Khan but the ball missed the sidepost by a few inches. Jamal’s midfielder Alamgir Kabir Rana was asking himself about what went wrong in the 55th minute as he failed to tap the ball in from a close range after Alfed Emoefe, the Nigerian forward made him free with a nice through pass. In the 89th minute Jamal’s substitute forward Sohel Rana’s head on a long throw of Arfful Islam hit the side post. The draw saw both Jamal and Mohammedan take their tally to seven points and Jamal clinch the group championship. Mohammedan is also almost sure of a semifinal berth as the best runners-up.
