Dhaka, April 02: Sheikh Russell Krira Chakkra won the title of ATN
Bangla Independence Cup Football Tournament with a 3-2 victory over Sheikh
Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the final at the Bangbandhu National Stadium on
Tuesday. Russell came very close in the 44th minute to move ahead but
Jamal defender Nasir Uddin Chowdhury stopped the joy of Russell at the end.
Winger Jahid Hossain put a through pass to Haitian striker Sony Norde who
dodged past opponent defender Nasir Chowdhury and goalie Sultan Ahmed Shakil but
lost his balance for a moment. After controlling balance Norde put a chip to
the net but Nasir Chowdhury cleared the ball with a header at the last moment. Midfielder Mithun Chowdhury broke the deadlock one minute after the resumption
with one to one combination with striker Jahid Hasan Emily. Mithun put a pass
to striker Emily who cutback the ball again to Mithun and the wily midfielder
made no mistake to tap the ball into the net. (1-0) Nigerian striker Sunday Chizoba restored the parity by a penalty shot
in the 52nd minute. Russell’s Ghanaian defender Abbas Inusah handled
the ball in the box and referee Abdul Hannan Miron whistled for penalty. Sunday
converted the spot kick. (1-1) Sony Norde again missed an open net in the 54th minute as
his chip went over the crosspiece after dribbling past defender Nasir and
goalie Shakil. Jamal moved ahead with own goal of Russell defender Abbass Inusah in
the 75th minute. Midfielder Raihan’s throw entered into the net
before deflecting Ghanaian defender’s body. (2-1) Russell leveled the score in the 78th minute through their
striker Sony Norde who netted the ball with powerful shot from the box after
capitalizing a pass of midfielder Mamunul Islam. (2-2) Midfielder Mamunul Islam squandered in the 102 minute as his shot
missed the post having one-on-one chance with Jamal’s custodian. Jahid Hasan Emily sealed the title for Russell in the 112 minute with
a header off a Mamunul’s free kick. (3-2)
Jahid Hasan Emily of Russel was adjudged Man of the Final and Alfred Emoefe
was the highest. Sony Norde was adjudged the “Play of the Tournament”.
Sk. Russell received a purse of 5 lacs as champions and Sk. Jamal also
received Tk 3 lacs as runner-up.
Minister for Textiles and Jute Abdul Latif Siddiqui was present as
chief guest and distributed the prizes.
