Dhaka, May 1: Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra won their maiden Bangladesh
Premier League title beating Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club 2-1 at the Bangabandhu
National Stadium on Wednesday.
With one match to go Russell took their points to an unassailable position of 35 and secured
their third title of the season.
Jamal went ahead through their Nigerian forward Alfred
Emoefe in the 38th minute. The Nigerian hitman just changed the
direction of winger Towhidul Alam’s cross with his toe and the ball hit into
the back net. (1-0)
Jamal had a chance to double the lead in the 46th minute but
winger Towhidul Alam failed to tap the cross of Alfred Emoefe from the right. Winger Jahid Hossain leveled the score in the 54th
minute with a placing shot from a rebounder after Moroccan forward Tarique Al
Janaby’s set piece hit the crosspiece. (1-1) Russell missed another chance to move ahead in the 60 minute.
Winger Jahid Hossain placed a ball over the goalie Omar Sharif Riad after
capitalizing a cross of Haitian forward Sony Norde but defender Nasir Chowdhury
saved Jamal to concede the goal just outside the goal line.
However the title was secured by Russell in the 85th
minute when forward Zahid Hasan Emily converted a penalty. Winger Jahid Hossain
was brought down at the edge of the box by Jamal defender Yeamin Ahmed
Choowdhury Munna and Emily made no mistake to score the winning goal (2-1).
