Dhaka, May 23: Thailand beat Philippines 1-0 in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup group B qualifiers at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Thursday.
Thailand’s attacking mood was evident from the very beginning and in the 10th minute Wilaiporn Boothduang,was unfortunate as the hardworking midfielder hit the crosspiece from the middle of the box.
Philippines hit back in the 20th minute but their star forward Jesse Anne Shugg fired wide of the side post from an advantageous position.
But it was Nisa Romyen, the Thai stat who broke the deadlock in the 37th minute. Rightly anticipating the through pass of Anootsara Maijareen, Nisa Romyen placed the ball past onrushing Philippines goalie Maria De La Cruz (1-0)
Three minutes after the resumption Wilaiporn Boothduang saw her freekick punched by Philippines goalie La Cruz and hit the inside edge of the crosspiece before returning to the field.
Philippines mounted pressure in the finishing stages and in the 65th minute Anne Shugg missed the line of a Heather Cook cross at the top of the six yard box. In the 85th minute Thai goalie Waraporn Boonsing dived forward to foil another attack of Jesse Anne Shugg.
Thailand who beat Bangladesh 9-0 in their previous match leads the table with six points. Philippines beat Iran 6-0 in their first match and will play their last against hosts on Saturday.
