Moroccan striker Samir Omari slammed the second hattrick of the Citycell Bangladesh League to give title chasers Sheikh Russel a convincing 4-1 win against visiting Chittagong Mohammedan at the Bir Shreshtha Shaheed Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamlapur in Dhaka on Tuesday.
The touring side held the third-placed Russel to a goalless draw in the first 45 minutes but the match came alive after the resumption with four goals coming inside 20 minutes.
Striker Yousuf drew first blood for the home side in the 54th minute when he netted the ball with a placing shot after a cutback from Mobarak.
But Russel’s celebration was soon over when Chittagong Mohammedan winger Ridon equalised two minutes later with a left-footed shot after meeting a long pass from Emon.
Goal-machine Omari, however, put Russel ahead again in the 66th minute when his angular shot beat the rival keeper after a long ball from Yousuf.
The Moroccan added his second in the 75th minute after exchanging passes with Yousuf and completed the treble in the 82nd minute with a diagonal shot, this time utilising a through pass from Roni.
The previous hattrick of the professional league also came against the port city black and whites when Arambagh’s Kenyan forward Nicodemus slotted three goals against them.
Russel are now in the third position with 19 points from seven matches, two behind joint leaders Mohammedan Sporting Club and Abahani Limited while Chittagong Mohammedan remained on six points from six encounters.
At the Sylhet Stadium, Beanibazar Sporting Club celebrated their maiden Bangladesh League victory upsetting Brothers Union of Dhaka 2-1 in Tuesday’s other match.
The hosts came into the game on the back of inferior form having three draws and no wins from five games while Brothers had two wins and four draws from six matches.
Beanibazar midfielder Pappu scored first goal for the home side in the 12th minute and the final damage was done by Guinean striker Mohamed Conte in the 48th minute. Brother Union’s foreign recruit Enock Bentil reduced the margin in the 57th minute.
Beanibazar moved to six points from six matches and the Gopibagh outfit, who suffered their first defeat, stuck to 10 points after seven matches.
