Russell’s winning start
Dhaka, June 14: Sheikh Russell Krira Chakkra made a winning start in the Grameenphone Super Cup beating Soccer Club Feni 2-0 in the opening match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Friday..
Sk. Russell had a couple of chances to move ahead but unfortunately all their efforts were denied by Soccer Club goalie Masud Rana and defenders.
BPL winners Russell came close to a goal in the 19th minute when their winger Md. Jahid whose header was saved by defender Alauddin from the goal line on a corner of forward Mithun Chowdhury.
Forward Akber Hossain Ridon of Soccer Club squandered an opportunity in the 35th minute as his shot flew past the sidepost on a right flank cross of Ali Hassan.
Forward Jahid Hossain Ameli was frustrated four minute before the first half as his left footer from the edge of the box was saved by goalie Masud Rana who dived to his right.
An awkward goal in the 49th minute saw Russell take the lead. Russell defender Nahid sent a low cross to the danger zone where defender Shimul tried to clear but the ball went into the net after hitting the post. (1-0)
Ameli was frustrated again when his left footed grounder hit the post on a shot pass of Mithun Chowdhury in the 55th minute.
Winger Md. Zahid doubled the lead and sealed the victory for Russell in the 75th minute with a fierce shot from the 25 yards that landed into the net after hitting the far post (2-0).
