Brothers move to semis
Dhaka, June 19: Brothers Union confirmed a semifinal berth as group
runners-up playing out a goalless draw with Mohammedan Sporting Club in the
group B of Grammenphone Super Cup at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on
Wednesday.
The B group champions Mohammedan already reached in the semis with seven points after winning over Sk. Jamal
and Team BJMC. Brothers Union beat Team BJMC and drew with Sk. Jamal in their
previous two matches and finished runners-up with five points.
Brothers Union had a chance to take the lead in the very fifth minute
of the match but striker Jewel Rana’s shot went over the crosspiece.
Brothers’ wily striker Jewel Rana again squandered another opportunity
to score when his left footer was blocked by opponent defender Md. Yeasin.
Mohamedan were very close to a goal but forward Md. Robin’s placing
shot on a square pass of Anisur Alam Sweet was saved by goalie Sujon Chowdhury
who dived to the right in the 32nd minute.
The traditional black and white was frustrated in the injury time of
the first half as their midfielder Shariful Islam’s shot struck the crosspiece.
The second half was a drab affair and no team were able to break the
deadlock.
