Abahani Limited handed a thumping 5-0 defeat to Muktijoddha Sangsad at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today to maintain pole position in the Bangladesh League.
The defending champions’ 15th win in 16 appearances pushed their collection to 46 points, seven ahead of title contenders and arch city rivals Mohammedan who have a match in hand.
Ghanaian playmaker Awudu Ibrahim started the rampage with a splendid shot from 20 yards after 19 minutes that went through Nizam’s gloves. The credit of the second goal also goes to Ibrahim, who set the second goal for the Sky-Blues. Ibrahim’s attempt came off a Muktijoddha defender but a lurking Ujjal made no mistake to place the rebound into the far post in the 22nd minute. Abahani spoiled a number of chances and went into the break with a 2-0 cushion before substitute Enamul made it 3-0 in the 70th minute. The national striker received a pass from Ibrahim and went round the lone Muktijoddha goalkeeper to increase the margin.
Abul, who has been in the bench most of the season due to injury, got Abahani’s fourth after taking a cross by Matiur Munna in the 82nd minute.
Ghanaian striker Sheriff Deen Mohammad sealed the victory in the stoppage time, joining Sheikh Russel’s Moroccan marksman Samir Omari as the league’s top scorer with 12 goals.
