Dhaka, Apr23: Two-headed goals by Alamu Bukola inspired title contenders Mohammedan Sporting Club to a come-from-behind 3-1 victory against Rahmatganj in the Bangladesh League today.
Emily scored the other on the brink of final whistle at the Bangabandhu National Stadium as Mohammedan, second in the table with 48 points from 18 games, closed the gap to four points with hattrick title chasers Abahani.
Rahmatganj, who held third-placed Sheikh Russel 1-1 in the previous match, took a stunning lead after 27 minutes when striker Mamum headed home following hard work by Nigerian forward Paul Nwachukwu, who took advantage of the black and whites’ defensive errors.
Maruful Haq’s boys still looked vulnerable at the back and Paul should have made 2-0 soon enough but the Nigerian’s chip from the top of the box over an onrushing goalkeeper Aminul missed the Mohammedan post.
Nigerian striker Bukola then restored parity in the 33rd minute when he headed the ball into the far corner after meeting a curling freekick by Mamun from the right flank.
Nasir was then denied by Rahmatganj custodian Nehal from point-blank range as the match went into the break at 1-1.
Rahmatganj’s Nigerian custodian Felix once again exposed the rival backline from the left flank but his cutback in the 53rd minute was hopelessly shot over by Mamun, who was unmarked near the six-yard box.
Mohammedan made three changes and led a relentless assault on the rival goal but it was a gaffe by Nehal that gave up the lead to the local giants. The Rahmatganj goalie completely misjudged a high left-flank centre by Wali Faisal and left his post, only to make way for Bukola score his second goal with a drop-header in the 69th minute.
Emily then regained the top scorer’s slot with his 14th league goal when the national striker made it 3-1 with a sliding volley on a right-side low cross by substitute Zahid in the 90th minute. Rahmatganj stuck to 19 points after their 8th loss in 17 matches.
