MSC lift Independence Cup
Dhaka, April 12: Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club Ltd emerged as the champions of Modhumoti Bank Independence Cup Football beating Soccer Club, Feni 5-4 in the penalty shootout after a goalless stipulated time final at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Saturday.
State Minister for youth and sports Biren Sikder distributed the prizes as the chief guest. Chairman executive committee of Modhumoti Bank Ltd Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh were also present
Mohammedan initiated the first attack in the 6th minute but Towhidul Alam Sobuj’s grounder from the middle of the box went straight to Feni goalie Md. Nehal.
In the 21st minute Mohammedan forward Zahid Hasan Emily made his way in the left flank and cut the ball back to Zahid Hossain who shot the ball over the crosspiece.
Emily missed another chance in the 28th minute as he missed the line of the ball in his attempted header on a cross of Arup Baidya.
Feni Soccer came back strong in the second half and they missed two consecutive chances. In the 48th Akbar Hossian Ridon’s square pass found Chuka Charles unmarked in the Mohammedan D box but his shot deflected off a defender for a corner.
In the 55th minute Gambian forward Landing Darboe’s cracking 25 yarder was punched for a corner by Mohammedan goalie Mamun Khan.
After the goalless 90 minutes the final went to extra time. In the 115th minute Ossuseni Zongo the Burkina Faso midfielder of Mohammedan shot wide from the middle of the box while Chuka Charles also shot over from an advantageous position in the 118th minute.
In the shootout Emily, Damien Chigozie, Habibur Rahman Shohag, Ossuseni Zongo and Obum Henry scored for Mohammedan while Mathew Mendy, Abdullah al Mamun, Chuka Charles and Landing Darboe scored for Soccer. Kabba Jobe missed.
