Hosts thrash Sri Lanka 4-2
Dhaka, January 8: Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka 4-2 in the opening match of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup at the Shamsul Huda Stadium, Jessore on Friday.
Shakhawat Hossain Rony put Bangladesh ahead in the 17th minute but a penalty from Dhanushka saw the scoreline tied 1-1 in the 21st minute. However Jahid Hossain restored the lead in the 22nd minute.
In the penultimate minute of the first half Nabi Newax Jibon scored the third for Bangladesh.
Six minutes after the restart Idisuriya Chaturangna made it 3-2 for Bangladesh.
However in the 88th minute a fumble by the Sri Lankan defence allowed Shakhawat Rony to run past the onrushing Sri Lankan goalkeeper and blast home from close range thus sealing a 4-2 winning start for Bangladesh.
