Arambagh oust Jamal
Dhaka, June 17: Arambagh beat defending champions Sheikh
Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd 5-4 in the
penalty shootout to move in the semis of the Wlaton Federation Cup at the
Bangabandhu National Stadium on Friday.
The first quarterfinal was locked 2-2 in the stipulated and
extra time.
In the 23rd minute Sheikh Jamal came close to a
strike when a swift footed exchange of balls between Enamul and Wedson Anselme
tore the Arambagh defence apart and Emeka Dalington found Arambagh goalie Mitul
Hasan at his mercy, but the Nigerian forwards right footer was parried away by
the goalie.
However it was Jamal defender Md. Linkon who broke the stalemate
in the 42nd minute with a cool finish. With Arambagh defenders
putting al the focus on Wedson Anselme, Emeka Darlington and Landing Darboe
linkon stole the show, fed by Wedson in the right flank linkon slipped past the
defence before finishing the task with a right footer (1-0)
Wedson Anselme, the Haitian captain of Jamal put his team on
two goal cushion in the injury time of first half when he nicely controlled a
through pass of midfielder Anamaul Huq Sharif and kept the control till
blasting the ball into the middle of the net (2-0)
But after the resumption
a different story was waiting for Jamal. In the 61st minute
Jafar Iqbal, the quick footer left winger of Arambagh curved a neat cross to
Yaok Samnik, the Cameroonian midfielder at the middle of the box and Yoko
powered it into the net with a strong header (2-1)
Jamal’s woe was continued in the 69th minute Yoko
Samnik providing a nice through pass to Kester Akon at the top of the Jamal
box, Kester kept his cool to beat onrushing Mitul Hasan with a nicely weighted
chip to send the ball into the far post net (2-2)
With scoreline locked
in a 2-2 tie the match went to the 30 minutes extra time and also in the
shootout as both teams failed to change the scoreline in the extra time.
In the penalties Arambagh’s Issa Yousif, Shihab, Bhashani, Kester
Akon converted from the spot while Yoko Samnik missed. Jamal’s Emeka, Wedson,
Yasin, and Landingcored from the spot,
Enamul and Kesto Kumar missed.
