Magura, February 12: Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra won the Bangabandhu Cup 2017 in Magura with a 5-4 score line from the final match that rolled into penalties after a goalless hour and a half.
The tournament had 16 teams taking part including some of the Dhaka’s premier clubs like Abahani, Mohammedan, Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra and the Bangladesh Navy.
Attending as special guest, former national captain Kazi Salahuddin said, “All the teams competed against each other quite well.”
The teams were split into four groups with four teams each where they played a round robin league format and advanced to the quarters and semis.
Muktijoddha Asaduzzaman Stadium in Magura was filled to the brim with excited spectators. Also Bangladesh Football Federation President, Salahuddin said that was the most significant aspect of the match. “It was a full house here. The atmosphere was wonderful with so many enthusiastic followers of the game.”
State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikdar was present among others.
The winning team was handed the trophy and medals by state minister Biren Sikdar in the closing ceremony.
The BFF president also commended the organisers for a job well done.
