Dhaka, February 22: The national version of the Bangabandhu & Bangamata F M Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament 2016 kicked off on Wednesday.
Bangabandhu Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament began its journey in 2010 to engage children with healthy co-curricular activities for their physical, mental and aesthetic development with a view to identifying talented players from grassroots for the future.
It’s counterpart for the girls, Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament started its journey a year later in 2011 with the same goals.
The Bangabandhu Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament 2016 kicked off at Bangabandhu National Stadium at 10am giving champions Rangpur a comfortable 4-0 victory against Sylhet’s finest.
Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament 2016 national level kicked off at the same venue at 11:30 am, resulting in a 2-0 victory for the Chittagong Division against Rajshahi Division.
Around 64,260 schools participated in this year’s 7th edition of Bangabandhu Gold Cup, with 10,92,420 players taking part. Their counterpart, Bangamata F M Gold Cup had 64,196 schools participating with 10,91,332 players.
The national round of the tournament, beginning on February 22, is set to continue through February 27 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium where the seven divisional champions of Bangabandhu and Bangamata tournaments will play against each other to decide upon the champions of 2016.
The finals of Bangabandhu & Bangamata F M Gold Cup Primary School Football Tournament 2016 will be held on March 2, at Bangabandhu National Stadium. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to be present on the occasion and distribute prizes at the end of the finals.
