Dhaka, March 14: Maziya Sports and Recreation Club of Maldives beat Bangladesh Premier League champions Dhaka Abahani Ltd. 2-0 in the group E match of AFC Cup 2017 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Tuesday.
Maziya took the lead with their very first attack with skipper Asadullah Abdullah cutting a through pass to fellow midfielder Imaaz Ahmed. Imaaz shrugged off the challenge of his marker paving the way to onrushing Md. Umar whose low left footer landed into the far post net (1-0).
Abahani, however, dominated rest of the proceedings adopting a fierce attacking style. Using the flanks as well as the midfield, the local outfit forced the visitors to a defensive approach, but the equalizer remained elusive for the sky blues till half-time. Abahani’s two notable chances fell into their way in the 29th minute and in the penultimate minute. Winger Rubel Mia missed the line of a low cross and English forward Jonathan Davids unleashed a feeble shot on the second occasion.
Abahani strengthened their attack substituting Mamun Mia with forward Nabib Newaz Jibon in the outset of second half but it hardly made an impact. In the 65th minute, Emeka Darlington missed a cross of Jonathan Davids at the top of the six yard box. Four minutes later, Maziya substitute Niyaz Hossain saw his right footer taken by Sohel.
However, in the 86th minute, Maziya skipper Asadullah Abdullah sealed the victory slamming the second one for his team with a solo effort (2-0).
