Dhaka, May 14: Chittagong Abahani has put up a brilliant team effort in their first match of the Walton Federation Cup 2017, edging past Dhaka Mohammedan 2-1 in a group C match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday.
Chittgaong Abahani’s rigorous pre-season training clearly made the difference as their opponents lacked synchronization and stamina in the match.
A solo effort from Chittagong Abahani’s Nigerian forward Afeez Olawale Oladipo broke the deadlock in the 36th minute of the match as midfielder Kowshik Barua, standing at the left edge of the midfield circle, gave a through pass for Oladipo who dashed down the left flank outrunning his marker and pushed a low shot past Mohammedan goalie Russell Mahmud Liton and confirmed 1-0 lead for Abahani.
Mohammedan’s defence was not up to the mark in the second half as they conceded the second goal in the 56th minute. Abahani midfielder Kowshik Barua charged from the right flank with fast pace as Mohammedan’s defence thinned down on that side, and scored in the far post net taking Abahani to 2-0 lead.
Mohammedan, however made a comeback in the 74th minute as forward Toklis Ahmed got the support from a brilliant build-up by Nigerian forward Nkowcha Kingley. The back heel from Tolkis baffled the Abahani side as the score line suddenly stood at 2-1.
Though the traditional black and whites tried hard in the last minutes, they could not manage to bring it to a draw as Abahani held it tight.
