Dhaka, May 15: Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra staged the first upset of the season beating new powerhouse Saif Sporting Club 1-0 in the Walton Federation Cup on Monday evening.
The group A duel saw Muktijoddha secure a quarterfinal berth after their very first match as Abahani Ltd and Saif Sporting played a 1-1 draw earlier.
The loss has thrown Saif at the door of elimination as a draw between Abahani and Muktijoddha will show them the exit door.
Iranian forward Esian Mohammed Zaki’s 40th minute strike was a class act. Anticipating the right trajectory of a low cross from midfielder Motiur Rahman, a confident Zaki flicked the ball into the near post leaving Saif goalie Ziko hapless in middle post (1-0).
Muktijoddha lock horns with Abahnai on May 21st to complete the group formalities as well as to decide the second quarter finalists.
