Dhaka, May 16: Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra moved into the quarterfinal of the Walton Federation Cup winning their very first match beating Farashganj Sporting Club 3-0 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Monday afternoon.
The group B affair, overall, was an one way traffic with Russell dominating all the way and Farashganj remaining at the receiving end. Farashganj, who earlier lost to Sheikh Jamal, took the exit door with the second defeat in as many matches.
Sheikh Russell midfielder Mehbub Hasan Nayon was staring to the sky wondering what went wrong in the 13th minute when his tricky placing shot on a low cross of fellow forward Aminur Rahman Sajib hit the outstretched hands of Farashganj goalie Borhanuddin.
Farashganj invaded the opposition territory in the 17th minute with forward Alam Nabi making his way through the defence but his shot went straight into the hands of Russell goalie Ziaur Rahman.
Dawda Cisse, the Gambian forward, put Russell ahead in the 32nd minute with a cracking right footer from the top of the box. Taking control of a long ball, the lanky Gambian took a few steps ahead before drilling the low shot into the far post net (1-0).
Farashganj’s woe continued as Russell doubled their lead seven minutes later. Midfielder Shahedul Alam Shahed initiated the move at the midfield then threaded a wonderful through ball to Sajib who took the ball at the right flank paving the way for Arup Baidya whose grasscutter rolled into the far post net (2-0).
Sajib included his name in the scorers list eight minutes after the restart as he outjumped his marker to head a cross of Arup Baidya that gave no chance to Farashganj goalie Borhanuddin (3-0).
Sheikh Russell and Sheikh Jamal lock horns in the last group match on Thursday to complete the formalities as both the teams have already secured their berth in the quarterfinals.
