Dhaka, May 16: Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club Ltd remained on the course of a quarterfinal slot in the Walton Federation Cup with a lucky 2-1 win over Arambagh Krira Sangha at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Mohammedan, who lost 2-1 to Chittagong Abahani in their previous match, scored the match-winner capitalizing on a blunder of the Arambagh defence and survived from conceding a goal courtesy of the woodwork in the dying stage of the match.
Arambagh, using the flanks from the very beginning, saw their efforts succeed in the 13th minute when winger Md. Jewel danced down the left flank and cut the ball to Rajon Miah whose right footer was blocked by Mohammedan goalie Rasel Mahmood Liton; the re-bound was picked by unmarked Robiul Islam who made no mistake to hit the back of the net (1-0).
However, Mohammedan restored the parity in the 34th minute riding on the strike of forward Toklis Ahmed. Following a back volley of Nigerian midfielder Samson Ilyasu, Toklis kept his cool to capitalize on the blunder of an Arambagh defender before unleashing a scorching left footer past Arambagh goalie Mahfuz Hasan Pritom (1-1).
Lady Luck smiled on Mohammedan in the 56th minute when Pritom failed to clear a simple back pass of defender Mokarram Bhuiyan and unmarked Nkowcha Kingsley toe-pocked the easiest goal into the empty net (2-1).
Arambagh was denied by the sidepost in the 77th minute when Abu Sufian Supil saw his head past Mohammedan goalie Liton bounce back to the game off the right hand post.
Mohammedan have three points from two matches while Arambagh are yet to open the account who are still to play Chittagong Abahani in the last match.
