Dhaka, May 18: Chittagong Abahani topped the group C of Walton Federation Cup 2017 beating Arambagh KS 2-1 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The Chittagong outfit earlier beat Dhaka Mohammedan 2-1 while Arambagh lost to Mohammedan by the same margin. With this win, Abahani emerged as the group champions with six points followed by Mohammedan who have three. Both the teams have moved into the last eight phase.
After a sluggish start to the game, Chittagong Abahani’s Nigerian forward Olawale Oladipo saw his shot hit the crosspiece in the 23rd minute.
However, Oladipo put Ctg Abahani ahead in the 34th minute with winger Zahid Hossain curving a corner from the right flag and the stocky Nigerian placing the ball into the net. (1-0)
Two minutes later, Arambagh restored the parity courtesy of Cameroonian forward Jean Jules Ikanga. Carrying a through pass of midfielder Robiul Hasan, Ikanga shrugged off his marker and hit the far post net with a slicing right footer. (1-1)
However, it was Chittagong Abahani defender Alison Udoka who sealed the fate of the match in the 62nd minute. Zahid Hossain’s looping corner was fisted away by goalie Akkas Sheikh but Nigerian defender Udoka placed the rebounder into middle of the net. (2-1)
Arambagh’s late efforts fell short of finishing touch as they bowed out of the tournament.
