Dhaka, Feb 10: Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakkra split points in a goalless draw to dent their title hopes in the Grameenphone Bangladesh League at the BSSM Kamlapur Stadium today.
Both teams remain level in the table with 15 points but the Dhanmondi outfit edge Russel by virtue of a better goal difference.
The star-studded Sheikh Jamal, though, dominated the show and kept pressure on the rivals but despite enjoying superior ball possession, they failed break the deadlock against an ultra-defensive Russel.
Zahid, in particular, sent a series of teasing crosses inside the Russel area but the Sehikh Jamal right-winger’s efforts went down the drains due to lack of cutting-edge by frontliners Emily and Enamul.
The best chance for them fell to Shakil in the 53rd minute but the winger unbelievably put the chance wide past the lone keeper after Russel custodian Mamun had choked on a low Zahid freekick.
Pakeer Ali’s men came close again in the 61st minute but Zahid’s long range shot was saved by Mamun, who once again was the saviour, spoiling another effort by Zahid in the 80th minute.
Russel’s strategy to rely on counter attacks also created chances but Moro Mohammad’s deflected shot was parried by Aminul who also denied Yusuf from point-blank range to keep the scoreline 0-0, Jamal’s first draw after three consecutive wins.
Sheikh Jamal coach Pakeer Ali expressed frustration after watching his boys’ goalless performance. “Our boys played well in the whole match and got many chances but did not score a single. They should score. They should not miss the chance being a national player,” said Sheikh Jamal coach.
On the other hand, Sheikh Russel coach Liton felt relief after the match and satisfied with his boys’ performance. I am satisfied because boys played as per my instruction. Team’s strategy was to rely on counter attack. Boys did it very carefully,” said former national striker.
