Dhaka, Apr 15: Abahani Club Limited moved to second round as a champion after beating Brothers Union Club 1-0 in the Independence Cup Football tournament 2011 group D match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today.
Brothers also reached second round as a group runners –up as they won their first match 3-0 over Chittagong Mohammedan Sporting Club.
Ghanaian striker Twum Frank, who scored the highest scorer for Abahani in the Bangladesh league, netted all important goal for Sky-blues in the 37th minute of the match. After receiving a pass from another Ghanaian Yusuf Aminu, Frank shot reached home after dodging two rival defenders and custodian Uttam Barua.
Both team got several chances but all their effort went in vain due to lack of good finishers.
Brothers could level the score in the 58th minute but Brazilian midfielder Danilo’s header was saved by Abahani’s goal keeper Sohel.
Abahani also got a chance to make their lead double but Frank powerful shot went over the crossbar finding rival goalie lonely in front.
Two matches will be held tomorrow at same time but different venues. Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club will face Sheikh Russel at BNS at 6:30 while Muktijoddha will meet Arambagh at the BSSM Mostafa Kamal Staium.
