Dhaka, Apr 21: A Sohel Rana goal helped Farashganj to move into the final of the Independence Cup Football Tournament as the old Dhaka outfit defeated new powerhouse Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi club1-0 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today.
The giant killers who defeated Dhaka Abahani Limited 2-1 in the penalty shootout to be in the semifinal fought gallantly though they were reduced to ten after 37 minutes. Their woe increased in the second of the four minute of the stoppage time when they were reduced to nine men.
Sheikh Jamal, the star-studded team never lived up to the expectations as the first half ended 0-0.
Sohel Rana, the young striker of Farashganj, again proved himself as a lucky for his team as scored the winning goal in the 51st minute of the match from a solo effort. The tall striker, who scored last match against Abahani limited in the quarter final, took a ball from midfield initiated by Shyamal Ahmed Rony, entered in the box dribbling past two defenders and beat Jamal goalie Aminul in the far post with low shot.
Sheikh Jamal tried hard to restore the parity but Kamal Babu’s men made a strong wall in front of the goal post that remained intact.
Earlier, in the 37th minute of the Referee Azad Rahman sent off Arambagh's Congolese striker Siyo Zunapio for his dangerous tackle over rival defender Ariful Islam.
The losers best chance came into 44th minute when Arif tried to control a ball with chest in danger area from a cross of Rezaul Karim but the chance was spoiled by rival goalie Sujon Chowdhury after holding the ball.
Shamol Ahmed Rony, another winning team midfielder was sent off by referee in the 90+ as the player intentionally spoiled time refuting referees decision to go outside with stretcher.
