Dhaka, Apr 22: Russian striker Eduard Sankhnevich steered Sheikh Russel to the final of the Independence Cup Football Tournament 2011 as they beat Mohammedan Sporting Club by a solitary goal at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today.
Russian striker Eduard Sankhnevich scored the decider in the 29th minute of the match when his left foot curling shot from outside of the box defeated rival goalie Titumir Chowdhury Titu on a through pass of frontman Monaem Khan Raju. This was the third goal for Eduard in this tournament as he scored one against Mohammedan in group match, one against Soccer club in the quarter-final.
The lead could have been doubled in the 43rd minute but Russel’s another foreign recruit Cameroon striker Efiong Duke spoiled the chance as his shot went over the cross bar on a pass of Raju. The first half ended 1-0 draw.
The Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting club were better in ball position in the second half but their striker Sunday, Amani missed some easy chances to restore the parity as Sheikh Russel Goalie Mamun Khan dismissed their attacks in one hand.
Mohammedan’s Cameroon striker Suday got a chance to level the match 51st minute but his right foot shot was saved by rival custodian Mamun Khan on a through of defender Arafat Rony.
Rwandan midfielder Amani missed another chance for Black and white as his shot saved Mamun on a cutback of Sunday in the 66th minute.
Best chance of the loser came in the 71st minute but Sunday’s shot again spoiled by Mamun Khan and Pradip Barua cleared the ball from danger area.
Sheikh Russel will meet Farashganj Sporting Club in final at the BNS on Sunday
