Dhaka, Apr 24: Farashganj Sporting Club clinched the title of the Independence Cup Football Tournament when they defeated Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra 5-4 by penalty shot in the final at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today.
The match ended 1-1 drew. Extra 30 minutes also ended with same result.
Both teams scored 3 goals out of 5 shot in the penalty. In the sudden death shot Farashganj scored 2 out of 2 while Russel 1 out of 2.
Earlier, Sheikh Russel drew the early blood when midfielder Yusuf’s shot saved rival goalie Sujon Chowdhury.
The giant killer Farashganj broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when their Nigerian striker kalu Johnson right foot powerful shot from the right side of the box defeated rival goalie Mamun Khan from a pass of striker Sohel Rana.
Moroccan striker Abbas Inushah brought Sheikh Russel in the match in the 79th minute by a solo effort as his long range sudden shot from midfield went past the rival custodian and landed the far post.
Russel many chances to move ahead but all their efforts went in vain due to not only lack of good finishers but also bad luck as their two shot hit the post.
Liton’s men best opportunity came in 8 minute of first half extra time as their goal scorer Abbas Inushah’s head hit the right post despite of open net chance.
Striker Sohel Rana of Farashganj was adjudged “Best Player of the Tournament" while James Saeed Moga of Muktijoddha Krira Sangsad became “Highest Scorer of The Tournament”. The champion team received 5 lach taka and runners-up team got 3 lach taka. Brothers Union was awarded "Fairplay Trophy"
