Dhaka, May 16: Rahmatganj MFS stunned defending champions Dhaka Abahani Ltd. 1-0 to register one of the biggest upset of the Grameenphone Bangladesh League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Monday.
Rahmatganj took the lead against the run of the play in the 23rd minute when Cameroonian forward Modo Hughes saw his 25 yard shot surprise Abahnai custodian Sohel who instead of punching the ball reacted late to send the ball crashing into the near post.
Abahani survived from going two goals down in the 28th minute when Idris Kasirye, the Ugandan forward of Rahmatganj failed to convert the penalty that was won by him after Sohel brought him down in the danger zone.
But the sky blue outfit’s frustration reached the sky in the 30th minute when Twum Frank, the seasoned forward failed to beat Rahmatganj goalie Iran Sheikh from a penalty. After Iran pulled him down in the six yard box Twum stepped up to take the penalty but shot straight to the goalie.
Twum Frank four minutes away form the half time whistle saw the angle free from the top of the box but his curved effort flew over the crosspiece.
Nine minutes after the interval substitute forward Shakhawat Rony’s scorcher was punched for a corner by Iran Shiekh. In the very next minute Michael Dumba, the Ugandan defender cleared a goal bound shot of Yusuf Aminu.
Abahani forward Robin headed over from the middle of the six yard box in the 66th minute, defender Linkon hit the angle of the post in the 74th minute, and Keivan Sajedi, the Iranian playmaker shot over the bar in the 87th minute to concede the third defeat.
Abahani remained on the second place with 35 points from 16 matches while Rahmatganj moved up to the sixth position with 20 points from the 16 encounters.
