Dhaka, May 21: Table toppers Muktijoddha crashed into a 1-0 defeat against Sheikh Russell in the lone match of the Grameenphone Bangladesh League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Saturday.
Ghanaian defenders Abbas Inusah scored the matchwinner in the 21st minute of the match to break the 13 match unbeaten run of the red outfit. Muktijoddha lost their second match of the league against Sheikh Jamal back in January 6. But they were unbeaten in the next 13 matches before today’s encounter against Sheikh Russell.
Russell’s strong defence made all the difference as Muktijoddha hitman James Saeed Moga was off form and Mithun Chowdhury was out due to three yellow cards. However their Argentine defender Lucinao Thieller wasted a couple of easy chances in the either half of the match.
Abbas Inusah leapt high in the air and used his height to head the ball past Muktijoddha goalie Biplob off a curved corner of Yusuf form the right hand flag.
However the loss did not affect Muktiojoddha’s position at the top as they have 38 points from 16 matches, three points from second placed Abahani. Sheikh Russell remained at the fourth position with 32 points form 16 matches.
