Dhaka, May 22: Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club moved to the second place of the Grameenphone Bangladesh League with a 2-1 win over Farashganj at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday.
With the win Sheikh Jamal also took the revenge of their 1-0 loss in the semifinal of the Independence Cup.
Shakil Ahmed, the Sheikh Jamal midfielder put his team ahead in the 9th minute after overlapping defender Nasir danced down the right flank and cut the ball back to onrushing Shakil who sidefooted the ball in the far post of Farashganj goalie Shujon Chowdhury(1-0).
Farashganj was unfortunate in the 23rd minute when midfielder Mokhlesur Rahman hit the crosspiece from the top of the box. Emmanuelle Ayuk, the Cameroonian attacker of Sheikh Jamal also followed Mokhles in the following minute when his drive from rebounded from the Farashganj crosspiece.
Farashganj rocked their illustrious opponents four minutes after the break when their Congolese forward Siyo Zunapiyo sneaked through the midfield and paved the way for onrushing midfielder Jewel Rana who beat Aminul with a fierce grounder from the top of the box (1-1).
Jamal sealed the fate of the match in the 55th minute with wily left footed midfielder Mamunul Islam restored the lead. Taking control of a Shakil cut back from the right flank Mamun unleashed a diagonal placing shot between the gap and the ball crashed into the far post net (2-1)
A heavy rainfall disrupted the tempo of the match in the last 20 minutes and the little notable moves took place.
Sheikh Jamal has 37 points, one less than table toppers Muktijoddha while Farashganj have 13, both playing 16 matches.
