Dhaka, June 10: Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club registered a 1-0 victory over Sheikh Russell in the Grameenphone Bangladesh League at the Bangabandhu national Stadium on Friday.
It is the first big win for the traditional black and white outfit against a top ranked team in this edition of the league.
Dhaka Mohammedan’s Nigerian hitman Sunday Chizoba broke the deadlock in the 25th minute off a delicate effort. Taking control of a through pass, initiated by Nigerian midfielder Nnadi Victor Sunday coolly placed the ball past onrushing Russell goalie Mamun Khan (1-0).
Defender Bappi rescued Russell from going two down as he cleared a head of Mohammedan’s Cameroonian defender Baybeck from the goal line in the 44th minute.
Russell’s best chance came in the 59th minute but substitute midfielder Mobarak’s upward placing off a Edward Shaknevic pass landed straight into the gloves of Mohammedan goalie Titumir.
Despite the win Mohammedan remained in the fifth position with 29 points from 20 matches while Russell remained fourth with 38 points from the same number of matches.
