Dhaka, June 15: Muktijoddha’s title dream was hit by a big blow as Farashganj hold the red outfit 1-1 in the Grameenphone Bangladesh League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Wednesday.
Muktijoddha now trail table toppers Sheikh Jamal by three points with both the team having two matches in hand. Unless Sheikh Jamal lose a match or draw two of their remaining fixtures Muktijoddha has almost no chance to win the title though they win their next two fixtures
Nigerian forward Alamu Bukola Olalekan put Muktijoddha ahead in the 35th minute as his fierce grounder off a Mithun Chowdhury cross from the left flank gave Farashganj goalie Shujon Chowdhury no chance to react.
But Farashganj hit back in the added time of the first half with Congolese forward Siyo Zunapio’s powerful drive from the middle of the box was too much for Muktijoddha custodian Biplob, who failed to stop it though touching the ball.
Muktijoddha’s frustration reached the sky when James Saeed Moga, the seasoned scorer blasted the ball well over the crosspiece from a penalty in the 82nd minute.
Muktijoddha were unfortunate again in the last minute of the match as Mithun Chowdhury’s head off a chip of James Moga bounced back from the crosspiece.
Muktijoddha took their tally to 44 points from 20 matches while Farashganj added a valuable point in their fight to save the relegation taking their tally to 19 form 20 matches.
In the other match of the day, Liberian striker Benjamin Cooper’s hat-trick helped Arambagh krira Sangha to slam Chittagong Abahani Limited 4-0 at the BSSM Mostafa Kamal Stadium.
In the first phase of the league, Arambagh also won against Chittagong Abahani Limited 2-1.
Cooper completed his hat-trick by scoring in the 52nd, 62nd and 69th minute of the match and Guinean striker Bangoura Ismail in the 53rd minute.
After this match, Arambagh collected 21 points from 20 matches while Chittagong Abahani kept in bottom with 5 points from the same number of matches.
