The defeat shattered Abahani’s dream of being runners-up as they completed their 20th match remaining on their previous collection of 40 while Sheikh Russell moved up to the third position with 41 points with one match to play. Abahani has two matches in their hand but even two wins cant take them up of Muktijoddha who has 47.
Edward Shaknevic put Sheikh Russell ahead in the 16th minute through a opportunistic strike. Abahani goalie Sohel punched a Mobarak cross curved from the right flank and the ball landed into the feet of unmarked Edward who slammed the home with a fierce left footer.
Abahani was unfortunate in the 64th minute when substitute forward Alfaz saw his placing off a through pass of Md. Biplob beat advancing Russell custodian Mamun Khan but miss the sidepost bt a few inches.
Abahani was reduced to ten men when goalie Sohel handled the ball outside the box in his attempt to clear a long ball and referee Azad Rahman flashed the red card. Attacking midfielder Md. Biplob took the gloves as Abahani already had substituted three players.
