Sheikh Jamal- Brothers in GP Super Cup Opener
Dhaka, July 5: Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club will face Brothers Union in the opener of the Grameenphone Super Cup at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Friday. The draw and the logo unveiling ceremony of the Tk. One Crore prize money tourney was held at the Ruposhi Bangla Hotel on Tuesday.
The draw however arrived as an even one as Sheikh Jamal, Dhaka Abahnai and Brothers Union was drawn in the group A while the group B was formed with Mukitjoddha, Sheikh Russell and Dhaka Mohammedan.
The prize money of the six team tourney remained as attractive as the last edition with the champions receiving Tk, one crore, the runners-up Tk. 20 lakh, both the losing semifinalists taking home a purse of Tk.7.5 lakh each and the remaining two receiving Tk. 5 lakh each.
Harunur Rashid, the chairman of the tournament committee was upbeat with the course of action. “The first edition of the Super Cup was a huge success but this time due to the time constraints we have shortened the tenure of the tournament, it means a team will win Tk. One Crore by playing just for matches and that’s why I hope all the matches will be fiercely competitive” said Harun.
The top two of each group will move to the semifinals.
Syed Tahmeed Azizul Huq, the head of Corporate Affairs of Grameemphone hoped to revive the glory of the football within a near future. “Football remains at the heart of the people throughout the country and Grameenphone has supported sports all through, we hope football will revive its glory with such endeavours like Super Cup and Grameenphone will be there” said Tahmeed.
BFF president Kazi Salahuddin, vice president Shawkat Ali Khan Jahangir, Deputy Director of Grameenphone Market Communication Sajid Rizwan Matin, former national cricket captain Khaled Mahmud Shujon actresses Bizori Barkatullah and Mehzabin were present in the draw ceremony.
