Mukti reach semis ousting Skh. Russell
Dhaka, July 14: Muktijoddha beat Sheikh Russell 2-1 in the last match of group B of the Grameenphone Super Cup to move into the semifinal at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Thursday.
The win saw Muktijoddha and Dhaka Mohammedan secure semifinal berth from the group. Mohammedan will meet Sheikh Jamal in the first semifinal while Muktijoddha will play against Dhaka Abahani in the second.
Muktijoddha earned four points, Mohammedan grabbed two and Russell earned one point from the group.
Effiong Duke put Russell ahead in the 33rd minute after midfielder Raju paved the way for the Nigerian and blasted home from the middle of the box (1-0).
Mithun Chowdhury equalized for Mukitjoddha in the added time of the first half after Russell custodian Mamun Khan dived into the feet of Motiur Munna but unmarked Mithun placed the rebounder into the empty net (1-1).
Muktijoddha went up ahead in the 67th minute after Motiur Munna’s placing off a Dami free kick turned to the game and Bukola tapped the ball into the far post (2-1).
Muktijoddha prevailed the remaining minutes though they were reduced to ten men when midfielder Maruf was send off due to his second bookable offence in the 83rd minute.
