Dhaka Abahani win Super Cup
Dhaka, August 6: Dhaka Abahani won the title and Tk. One crore beating Dhaka Mohammedan by 3-2 goals in the penalty shootout after the stipulated 90 minutes of the final the Grameenphone Super Cup ended 2-2 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Saturday.
Finance minister A.M.A. Muhith distributed the prizes as the chief guest. State Minister for Youth and Sports Ahad ali Sarker and BFF president Kazi Salahuddin were also present on the occasion.
Sunday Chizoba scored the first goal in the 23rd minute with a diving header off a neat right flank cross of Shariful.
Shariful was instrumental again in the 31st minute when his attempted cross was fisted by Abahani goalie Sohel into the middle of the box and the ball fell into the feet of unmarked Towhid who just tapped home from close margin.
Twum Frank, the Ghanaian forward reduced the margin in the 35th minute after Awudu Ibarhim set him free with a backpass and Twum hit the back of the net from the middle of the box.
Mohammedan was reduced to ten men when Ghanaian custodian Md. Al Hasan punched Twum Frank in the 40th minute and referee Miron had flashed the red card to send Hasan out.
Twum Frank equalized in the 75th minute with a diagonal shot off an Alfaz chip from the middle of the box.
Abahani pounded considerable pressure in the second half but failed to score in the second half. Substitute Mohammedan custodian Titumir who took field at the cost of Towhid saved two close range shots of Twum Frank and Md. Robin in the dying minutes.
The extra 30 minutes saw both the team concentrate on not conceding a goal but in the 110th minute Abahani’s substitute forward Shakhawat Rony missed an easy chance failing to tap the ball into the empty net as Alfaz cut a low cross that beat Titumir in the near post.
Cletus Blamo, Shakhawat Rony and Lincon scored for Abahani in the penalty shootout while Alfaz and Twum Frank missed. Sunday Chizoba and Bhashani converted for Dhaka Mohammedan while Baybeck, Amani and Nche Francis failed.
