Dhaka Abahani in last eight
Dhaka, January 8: Dhaka Abahani moved into the quarterfinal of the Grameephone Federation with a 2-1 win over Arambagh in a group B match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday.
In the other match of the day Bangladesh Police beat Soccer Club, Feni by 1-0 goal at the BSSMK Stadium.
Abahani who is the lone team to register two consecutive victories in the tournament saw their Nigerian forward Lucky Paul Otofe and Ghanaian forward Twum Frank score the goals for them. Md. Mamun netted the consolation for the losers.
Abahani took the lead in the 18th minute when Waly Faisal crossed from the left flank and Twum Frank headed it, Arambagh goalie Mustafiz's punch on the ball landed in the feet of Lucky Paul who scored from a close range (1-0).
Twum Frank doubled the margin in the 66th minute when he beat Mostafiz from the edge of the six yard box after receiving a lob of Lucky Paul (2-0).
Arambagh defender Abul Kashem hit the cross piece in the 81st minute and substitute midfielder Md. Mamun scored in the 83rd minute after going past Abahani goalie Sohel. Mamun following a defence lapse (2-1).
At Kamalapur Mofizur Rahman scored in the 56th minute from a penalty that turned into the match winner. Mofizur was fouled by Mustafa Kaba inside the box and Police was awarded the penalty.
Abahani top the group with six points, Bangladesh Police has three, while Arambagh and Feni Soccer has one point each.
