Feni Soccer stun Dhaka Abahani
Dhaka, January 12: Feni Soccer stunned defending champions Dhaka Abahani 2-1 in one of the last matches of Group B at the BSSMMK Stadium, Kamalapur on Thursday.
Abahani who earlier beat Bangladesh Police and Arambagh topped the group with six points but it was heartbreaking for Feni Soccer who despite the win failed to reach the last eight due to inferior goal difference. Both Arambagh and Feni Soccer finished with four points but Arambagh prevailed with a better goal difference.
Feni Soccer took the lead in the 22nd minute when Nigerian forward Rowland took the advantage of a misunderstanding between defender Mamun Miah and goalie Sohel and placed the ball in the far post (1-0).
Abahani piled up pressure in search of an equalizer but Twum Frank and Awudu Ibrahim’s effort in the 26th and 55th minute was foiled by Feni Soccer goalie Uzzal.
Abahani equalized in the 66th minute when Feni Soccer skipper O.K. Victor tapped Abahani defender Nasir from the back at the top of the six yard box and Abahani won a penalty. Twum Frank converted the spot kick (1-1).
However Abahani was in the backfoot again in the 76th minute when Feni Soccer defender Yasin scored from an acute angle with a quickly taken right footer. Rowland headed the ball toYasin from the right edge of the box and Yasin scored the winner. (2-1).
Abahani will play the runners-up of group C in the quarterfinal.
