Mukti edge past Russell
Dhaka, March 13: A ten men Muktijoddha beat Sheikh Russell 1-0 to bounce back to the winning ways and also to retain at the top of the Grameenphone Bangladesh Premier League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Tuesday.
The win saw Muktijoddha lead the table with 16 points from seven matches while Sheikh Russell who conceded their third successive defeat remain on their previous 8 points from seven matches.
Alamu Bukola Olalekan, the Nigerian forward of Sheikh Russell, hit the crosspiece in the 6th minute.
Mamunul Islam, the Muktijoddha midfielder did the same in the 44th minute curving a free kick from the left flank.
Four minutes after the interval Sheikh Russell defenders denied Muktijoddha twice. Bappi Hasan Murad cleared a Mamunul Islam corner from the goalline on the first occasion and Abbas Inusah cleared the ball to safety after Mithun Chowdhury headed the Lima corner that hit the side post.
In the 56th minute Bukola fed compatriot Naftali with a square pass at the top of the box but Naftali shot over the box.
Muktijoddha was reduced to ten men in the 74th minute when defender Rezaul Karim Reza saw his second yellow card due to a foul upon Yamin Munna.
However Sunday Chizoba broke the deadlock in the 78th minute after Mamunul Islam fed the Nigerian with a through pass and Sunday beat onrushing Biplob with from the middle of the box.
Russell tried hard in the remaining minutes but failed to score.
