Dhaka, April 16: The Bangladesh National Women's Team and the U14 boys were awarded by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh at the Ganabhaban on Sunday, April 16.
Prime Minister invited successful athletes of the country at the ceremony on the occasion of the Bengali New Year.
On behalf of the U-16 girls’ national team, the Bangladesh Women’s National Team captain Sabina Khatun received a 10 lakh taka cheque from the Prime Minister.
The premier also gave Tk 1 crore worth of cheques each to the Bangladesh Swimming Federation, Hockey Federation, and Bangladesh National Cricket Team on behalf of Bangladesh Cricket Board.
She emphasised on sports and cultural activities besides education and stated without athletics and cultural activities a nation cannot grow healthily.
The wealthy population of the country were urged to come forward to support, sponsor and patronize regarding sports.
After handing crests, cheques and other prizes to the players at the Ganabhaban, she thanked them for attending the event.
Regarding the occasion, the Prime Minister said she wanted to give the athletes some small gifts on the occasion of Bangla New Year as they have represented Bangladesh to reach an honourable place.
The Bangladesh National Women's Team has leapt ahead 11 places in the latest FIFA rankings. The Bengal girls are now ranked 103rd among 177 nations with 1003 points up from their previous 114th with 987 points. Among the South Asian nations, Bangladesh is third trailing India and Nepal.
Aside from the Women’s team and U14 boys, the event was attended by players from Bangladesh National Cricket Team, Women's Cricket Team, Deaf Cricket Team, Bangladesh Special Winter Olympic Team, Archery Teams, Roller Skating Team, Handball Teams, Hockey Team, Shooting Team, weightlifting Team, Volleyball Team, swimmers, golfers, chess players, Junior Women's Badminton Team and gold medallists of South Asian Games.
