Dhaka, May 9: With two teams out of three qualifying for the quarterfinals, the draw of the Walton Federation Cup appeared to be an even one for all the 12 participant teams at the BFF House on Tuesday.
Reigning champions Dhaka Abahani Limited was placed in group A along with new big-budgeted Saif Sporting Club and Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra in the curtain raiser tournament billed to get underway on May 13.
The draw of the first professional tournament for the season 2016-17 saw two premier league giants – Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra – owned by the same owner placed in the same group of B.
Traditional crowd-pullers Mohammedan Sporting Club may face a tough time as they were grouped with new powerhouse Chittagong Abahani and last year’s Federation Cup runners-up Arambagh Krira Sangha guided by former national coach Maruful Haque.
Group E appeared to be the easiest one where Brothers Union, Team BJMC and Rahmatganj MFS will fight with each other for the top two finishes to reach the knockout stage.
Group A: Abahani, Muktijoddha, Saif Sporting
Group B: Sheikh Jamal, Sheikh Russel, Farashganj
Group C: Chittagong Abahani, Arambagh, Mohammedan
Group D: Brothers Union, Rahmatganj, Team BJMC
