Dhaka, May 22:Defending champions Dhaka Abahani have emerged champion of group A and secured quarterfinal birth beating Muktijoddha 1-0 in the Walton Federation Cup at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Monday.
Despite the defeat Muktijoddjha have finished runners-up also reaching the last eight.
Rubel Mia scored the match-winner for sky-blue Dhanmondi outfit in the 30th minute utilizing Gambian midfielder Landing Darboe’s precise lob into the far post.
In the penultimate minute of the match Nabib Newaz Jibon missed a clear chance, standing a few feet away off the side post, Jibon instead of placing the ball with his foot tried to head a low cross of Rubel Miah consequentially missing the line.
Winger Sohel Rana missed another opportunity four minutes after the resumption firing the ball over the crosspiece after onrushing Uttam Barua saw the corner of Emon Babu slip away from his gloves.
Abahani’s frustration continued in the 89th minute with midfielder Shahedul Alam Shahed taking control of a re-bounder blasted the ball above.
Group A champions Dhaka Abahani Limited will play the 3rd quarterfinal against Group D runners-up Brothers Union at the same venue on May 26 while Muktijoddjha will play Rahmatganj MFS in the 4th quarterfinal on May 27.
The quarterfinal will begin on Wednesday with Group B champions Sheikh Jamal DC and Group C runners-up Dhaka Mohammedan SC.
