Dhaka Jan 13: Abahani Limited survived a scare when the defending champions recorded a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against Chittagong Mohammedan in the fourth round of the GrameenPhone Bangladesh League today at Cox’s Bazar.
After an upset 1-0 defeat to Farashganj in the third round, the Dhaka giants found themselves in trouble when veteran striker Farhad put the home side ahead after 69 minutes at the Cox’s Bazar Stadium.
However, the visitors pulled off two goals in quick succession through Ghanaian forward Frank and youngster Sakhawat Hossain Rony to register their second win in the league.
Both teams did not perform any organised attack and failed to create any clear cut chances in the first half.
However, Farhad broke the deadlock as he struck on the rebound after Abahani’s rookie goalkeeper Sohel failed to hold on to a shot by Shipon.
Abahani came back in the match in the 75th minute when Frank headed home to level the score from a right side cross from fellow Ghanaian Awudu Ibrahim.
Rony sealed the victory for the sky-blues with a headed goal after meeting a cross by Ibrahim just four minutes before the final whistle.
Abahani players and officials felt some relief with the win after a painful defeat in the last match because this win will bring confidence back for the team. “We won today. It is a good comeback. It is good for our team. Players got the confidence back,” said manager Satyajit Das Rupu.
“It is usual that after a defeat players feel some pressure and we came to this match without our two regular goalkeepers who are injured,” Rupu said referring to Himel and Zia.
“We also missed our top defender Samad Yussif. We were without two major players and naturally were under pressure in first half. But they came back in the second half and went for a win. I am happy with their attitude.”
The win put Dhaka Abahani on third of the table with seven points having two win, one draw and one loss while Chittagong Mohammedan are trailing them by three points having win one match.
Rahamatganj MFS will face Dhaka Mohammedan SC at BSSM Mostafa Kamal Stadium tomorrow at 4 pm.
